Lawrence App grew up in a musical family in the Washington DC area where he studied piano, guitar, and voice as a youth. After performing with several church and club groups, Lawrence began touring in 1974 with various variety, jazz, and latin ensembles. In 1980, he relocated to Florida and co-founded the Caribbean-pop group Windjammer, a band he still performs with on a part-time basis. After many years of successful performances and recordings with Windjammer, he went back to school, earning a B.M. in Jazz Studies from the University of North Florida and an M.M. in ethnomusicology from Florida State.
Lawrence currently divides his time between teaching music at the college level, performing commercial gigs, and writing and performing his own music. He has five CDs available covering a variety of styles from reggae to jazz to death metal. He also has published scholarly works on musics of the African-Atlantic diaspora. In addition to his gigs with Windjammer, he has been one of the main solo performers for Bahama Breeze over the past seven years. He is also currently performing as a singer-songwriter-guitarist at regional original music venues.
